Tonight’s the night for the Big Blue Nation of Kentucky Wildcat fans. After less than stellar play prior to the Southeastern Conference Tournament, few Kentucky fans thought that this night would even be possible, myself included. You see, I was born and raised in Illinois. But when most people think of Illinois they think of that town of corrupt politicians, and people who think that we are a bunch of rural dummies. That dreadful city that I’m referring to is Chicago, home of Major League Baseball’s lowliest team the Baby Bears, also known as the Cubs. Where I’m from, I’m just over an hour from St. Louis and about the same time in the opposite direction from Kentucky. The first town you arrive in after crossing the Ohio river is Paducah, which is also the site of the Tri-State regions NBC affiliate. That is how I became a Kentucky fan and part of Big Blue Nation. For as long as I can remember, WPSD, the NBC affiliates call letters, has always shown UK Basketball games. In the early 80’s, when I became a fan, they would show the games tape delayed after the 10:00 news. Their simply wasn’t anything greater to me than to spend the night at Grandma and Grandpa’s and get to stay up late and watch UK Basketball. Now, tonight again, they get the chance to do what Big Blue Nation expects them to do every year, win a National Championship. Louisville did it last year, with a former UK Coach, and it was like pouring salt in an open gash. But, if Kentucky can bring it home 2 out of the last 3 years, it will be a much sweeter accomplishment. It’s not going to be easy, The University of Connecticut won in 2011, the year before Kentucky’s last Championship. UCONN has maybe the best backcourt in the nation and a solid leader in second year coach Kevin Ollie. One thing I will guarantee about tonight is that it will be a great show so tune in and GO BIG BLUE!
